Project SaCH

Project SaCH in Aceh

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2008 to be the International Year of Sanitation in order to put the spotlight on this global crisis and to spur efforts to fulfil one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) — to reduce by half the proportion of the 2.6 billion people without access to basic sanitation by 2015. In line with this spirit and aim, NDI has conceptualized Project Sanitation Campaign and Social Research (Project SaCH) in partnership with the World Toilet Organization (WTO) in Aceh, the area worst hit by the earthquake and Tsunami in December 2004. The project aimed to help raise awareness of the necessities of basic sanitation and its importance to the community as a whole, as well as conducting social research to gain better understanding of the existing water and sanitation practices of the community.

In addition, Project SaCH aimed to contribute to the sustainable development of a self reliant rural community in Aceh through education and social research, while empowering ASEAN youths by enlightening them to the socio-cultural conditions in Indonesia. Involving youths from Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines, the project provided opportunities for youths from different ASEAN countries to cooperate with one another at the tertiary level and beyond. This interaction allowed them to reflect and critically think about the diversity of development in ASEAN countries. Project SaCH was supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Singapore and Singapore's National Youth Council.
